As a leader, I am familiar with all the underlying factors that shape expectations for a candidate applying for a position. We need to move away from having a mental image of the “solution.” This often clouds our perspective and frequently leads us to try to “clone” rather than “discover.” The perfect match is a utopia. A numerical target tied to employee absence or turnover is never the right basis for finding the next talent. As the hiring party, we must dedicate our efforts and energy to developing methods to spot talent. This is sound logic and good business. However, companies and leaders are not always equipped to do the right thing. That’s where our unions must develop methods that employers can rely on to ensure equality for all our members. We cannot eliminate feelings or challenge perceptions, but with the right methods and tools, we can set them aside. Leaders and organizations thrive on development—let’s leverage that to help them help us!
